bug tracking software - any suggestions? Either hosted or self-hosted really. We're looking for a good solution for both support requests and project issue tracking.

I'm about to check out bugzilla and scarab just to see what
they're like.
Bugzilla wasn't as user friendly as I had hoped, you need to
fill in all kind of different information then reporting a bug,
dunno how easy that is to customize.
I've used bugzilla as a bug tracking tool in the past. I found
it pretty overwhelming in terms of options, buttons and ticks as an
end-user. I had no involvement in the setup or hosting end. We used
it as a bug and feature tracking platform for hardware &
software co-development and it seemed quite robust but I'm not how
many people really understood its capabilities. I've been looking
for something to use as a simple help-desk app and bugzilla would
be way too complex at the UI. I've tried using phpBB for the same
purpose and was too limited in terms of features (although there
does seem to be an active plug-in or mod community) and
customisation.
Ideally I'm looking for something which we can restrict access
to, allowing clients into a specific client project area - in there
they can either report an issue or request maintenance.
Then there would also be our own project areas in which we could
track issues with sites we are developing.

www.lighthouseapp.com looks nice, but fairly pricey.

Well I guess I'll test it out.

I imagine you'd have to allow some effort/time to train clients on how to navigate the various options that bugzilla presents.
It has been about 2-3 years since I used it so the UI may have improved.
I would have considered it a little 'hard-core' so it would depend on clients' abilities.

Hmm. Bugzilla isn't going so well - I have no Pearl familiarity

Yes, Perl is one of the dependencies, little bit of pain to get it installed.

Aye. I noted that it was but I know pearl is installed on our server - just not sure how to make use of it.
I know our server admin is always creating little pearl scripts..

Scarab looks terrifyingly complicated.. looking at zentrack.net now - looks like it might be reasonably simple..

Anyone ever heard of: http://www.thebuggenie.com/

Aye, I'm familiar with trac from posting issues with WordPress who use it as well.
It looks nice enough, but I got turned off by the Python usage - just due to me having no familiarity with python.
